Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle has been one of our favorite Nintendo Switch games since its release in 2017, and a sequel was always going to have a lot to live up to. Thankfully, Ubisoft went above and beyond with Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. This delightful strategy game captured everything that made the original so special and layered atop of those fine foundations with a more complex and complete experience. There's more strategic depth to the combat and more vibrant worlds to explore, making this feel like a true evolution

Elden Ring

Elden Ring is all anyone can really talk about these days, and for good reason. FromSoftware's latest punishment-simulator has all the familiar touchstones of a Souls-like but expanded out into an open world with a story crafted by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, so you know it's not going to pull any punches.

The PC version of the game has had some performance issues that FromSoftware is working on patching. Still, even with these issues, it's unquestionably one of the best games, if not the best, that the studio has ever put out.

As devoted fans of the studio's work since the original Demons' Souls on the PS3, we don't offer that kind of praise lightly, but like the Souls-like genre itself, you gotta earn it, and FromSoftware unquestionable does with Elden Ring.

Marie’s Room

Marie’s Room
isn’t a game that will change the landscape of the industry as we know it, instead serving as a worthwhile journey into someone else’s life that you can get through in your lunch break — it takes only an hour to get through but it’s an hour that you will be glad you spent.

Perhaps most easily (and maybe cynically) labelled as a walking simulator, Marie’s Room is a mystery about two friends and the passage of time presented through a recollection that’s open to interpretation. If you want to play something that will make you sit back and reflect, this is the free PC game for you.

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut (2021)

You go through the most modern game on our list as a cop with amnesia, who’s trying to solve a murder through dialogue in a city ruined by war. What’s not to love? Though the game was already great on its initial 2019 release, it was enhanced significantly with a free update on PC in 2021. Written and designed by Estonian novelist Robert Kurvitz, this independent game dev didn’t know what a hit he had until Game of the Year awards began pouring in.

BioShock

Would you kindly give this iconic horror FPS the respect it’s more than earned? Heavy on the Ayn Rand references, in 2K Games’ hit 2007 release, you make your way through Rapture, a once-idyllic underwater metropolis that’s been overrun with genetic mutants and huge protectors known as Big Daddies. The eerie visuals, the tenseness that permeates throughout, along with a well-executed plot twist, earned this game a number of awards, including several Game of the Year spots.

Launching a series that’s proven its staying power, with a Metascore of 96 and a User Score of 8.6, BioShock boasts a combined score of 9.1.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim (2011)

Home to one of the Active communites, Skyrim has spent the last decade at the top. Though, how many platforms Skyrim has reached has become a meme, the game more than made a home for itself in the action RPG genre.

It was heralded for being versatile, engaging, and well-rounded for its approach to classic RPG elements like character class, in-game perks, NPCs, UI, and art style. Skyrim still stays relevant with a Metascore of 94 and a User Score of 8.4 averaging out to 8.9.

The Sims (2000)

Will Wright had a hit with Sim City. So, it was bound to be a success when he took a magnifying glass to it and let you play dolls with the people living there. Throughout the years since its release, The Sims franchise has taken on a life of its own, eclipsing Sim City and going on to spawn sequels, spin-offs, and add-ons. The game is fun and easy enough to bring casual gamers in, promising friendships, romances, careers, and most importantly, homeownership.

Inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame in Rochester, NY in 2016, with a Metascore of 92 and User Score of 8.0, The Sims kicks off our list at a strong 8.6.

Minecraft

The grip Minecraft had on the gaming community when it launched can’t truly be forgotten. The game initially released in early 2009 and had developer updates steadily until Mojang released the final version of it in late 2011, selling over a million copies in the first month. Consistent updates have kept the game relevant even today.

Taking numerous awards from gamers young and old alike. With it’s Metascore of 93 and User Score of 8.1, this sandbox game has stood the test of time at an average score of 8.7.

Fez

Fez

At first glance, Fez's squeaky-clean, pixelated aesthetic is a love letter to the classic platformers which defined the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. Look beneath its shiny veneer, however, and discover a dimension-breaking, landscape-shifting, super-intelligent puzzle game that breathes new life into the old-school sidescroller formula. Exploratory by design, Fez side-steps limited lives and boss battles, and instead encourages players to experiment. You do this while traversing a truly gorgeous world, conversing with an array of whimsical characters, and interacting with a slew of glyphs, treasure trails, and secret rooms, all in a bid to restore the fabric of spacetime. Fez's groundbreaking rotation mechanic in essence delivers a 2D puzzle game inside a three-dimensional world, and as a result, keeps you guessing from beginning to end.

SNIPER ELITE 5

It’s easy, for the uninitiated, to write off the Sniper Elite franchise as a hyper-violent Nazi-killing X-ray gore fest. It is that, yes. But it’s also a paragon for excellent level design, and Sniper Elite 5 continues that trend — in fact, it features some of the best sandbox missions I’ve ever played. They sprawl across mine-riddled beaches, bucolic wineries, and coastal chateaus, capitalizing on every chance to give you a sightline, however narrow, to the next soon-to-be-shattered Nazi skull.

This was no easy task, considering that the newest outing brings the franchise to World War II-era France, quite possibly video games’ most rote destination. But developer Rebellion Developments has found new ways to make the beaches of Normandy exciting. There are elements of IO Interactive’s Hitman trilogy on display here, as the roguish Karl Fairburne is forced to sneak into bunkers and cobblestone alleys, trading his trusty sniper rifle for a silenced handgun and close-quarters know-how. There are also abundant reminders of Arkane’s Dishonored games, with multiple approaches to every objective, ranging from non-lethal to what I can only describe as very lethal. Sniper Elite 5 has elevated an already fantastic franchise to the pantheon of the immersive-sandbox greats. —Mike Mahardy
